Alec Owen Nance will soon be on his way to Los Angeles for pilot season. Alec, who will be 14 in April, is a student at St. Stephens Lutheran School and lives with his family in Hickory. His parents are Tamara and Van Nance, and he has three brothers and a sister.
His mom says Alec has always had an interest in movies and television shows, particularly old ones.
One of his favorites is the 1950s "Superman" series with George Reeves. Alec also loves comedies. Early on, he participated in small church and school productions. Starting middle school, he became more confident and able to speak out in front of others. He was encouraged by a teacher to pursue theater productions.
After putting him off for a year, his parents consented to his auditioning for a role. Their concern was that he continue to do well in school and that he be committed to the rehearsals and performances.
In January 2011, he was cast in his first role at the Hickory Community Theatre. He went on to perform in two more productions. He not only wanted to be on stage, but wanted to learn about the entire production.
Alec attended a stage manager's class and was the only teen there. He also helped with the sets. Alec soon asked his parents to let him work with an agent.
In August 2011, they visited The Brock Agency in Hickory and signed with Beverly Brock. Alec also began training with Jeff Hartman at Hickory Arts. Since August, he has been in another play at The Green Room.
He has also been a part of several N.C. projects, including several feature films and the hit NBC TV show, "Revolution." Alec's other interests are art and magic. The best magic for him, though, is transforming into a character.
He continues training with various workshops including one that was held in Charlotte by the casting director for "iCarly," Krisha Bullock. She evaluated Alec and gave him positive feedback and told him she felt that he was ready to audition for any type of role in Los Angeles.
In November, Alec was in a competition sponsored by The Brock Agency — Brock Epic Showcase of Talent (BEST) — held in Hilton Head, S.C. Alec won "BEST" commercial for male, 9 to 13. He had callbacks with two agents, one manager from Los Angeles and one agent from New York.
At the competition, Alec met Brad Diffley with Mavrick Artists. Diffley has now asked Alec to come to Los Angeles for pilot season.
The adventure starts in early February, and Alec is anxious to see where it will lead. He says he is committed to the profession and feels as comfortable in front of the camera as anywhere else. It's a great feeling to be doing something that gives him a sense of fulfillment and validation, he says.
Alec will retain Brock as his national agent and Diffley at Mavrick Artists Management as his management team.
Brock says people should keep an eye out for Alec.
"He has determination and drive, something that is a must in this business, and he has the full support of his family,"
she says. more
