William Knight: Multi-Instrumentalist Instructor at Hickory Arts

William Knight studied Jazz Guitar Performance and Bluegrass, Old Time & Country Music at East Tennessee State University. He now offers Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced lessons in Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, and Ukulele at Hickory Arts.


Early Musical Beginnings

William’s passion for music began early, influenced by his grandparents' classic country band. He started piano lessons before kindergarten and continued for five years. By his 11th birthday, he received an electric guitar and soon after began private guitar lessons. This foundation laid the groundwork for his lifelong commitment to music.


High School Musical Involvement

During middle and high school, William expanded his skills by joining the school band as a percussionist. In addition to this, he served as drum major for the marching band in his junior and senior years. He also played in the Western Piedmont Youth Symphony while participating in the percussion program at Lenoir-Rhyne College, furthering his musical growth.


College Studies and Transition to ETSU

Initially, William pursued percussion at East Carolina University. However, he later transferred to East Tennessee State University (ETSU) to focus on banjo and jazz guitar. During a gap year, he taught guitar lessons and studied with notable musicians such as Reggie Harris and Andy Page. Furthermore, he performed in the Lenoir-Rhyne Jazz Ensemble, which further enhanced his teaching and performance skills.


Achievements and International Experience

At ETSU, William earned scholarships and studied with renowned instructors. Additionally, he toured Scotland and Northern England through a formal exchange program. His international experience included playing banjo and guitar in Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale.


Professional Experience

After returning to the U.S., William pursued degrees in Jazz Guitar Performance and Bluegrass Old Time and Country Music. He performed with various groups, led the band at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, and played in theatrical productions at The Green Room and Hickory Theatre. Moreover, he continues to expand his expertise across different musical genres.

William Knight is eager for future opportunities at Hickory Arts and remains dedicated to sharing his diverse musical expertise with students. He is committed to fostering a love for music while inspiring the next generation of musicians.
